During the pandemic years, widespread gym closures left many without their usual means of working out. As a result, a number of people turned to mobile applications for virtual workouts. A forgotten app
They had one app for video links to classes, and a sticker pack. The app had no community participation and was no longer updated.
A brand centered on fun and wellness
A committed to the environment and wellness. With a no-judgment policy, they actively involve the community in promoting movement worldwide through their OV influencers.

OV boasted a youthful, active, and eco-friendly brand, yet fell short on engaging tools

To understand perspectives, we targeted active, social people in their 20s. We created a recruiting screener, posted it on social sites, and selected participants fitting our criteria. After interviewing 6 people, we validated our assumptions about the link between motivation and community.

Creating solutions for Lucia and OV to foster connectivity during isolating times

To begin developing design ideas, we leveraged everything we had learned and created feature categories that would meet both Lucia’s and OV’s needs. We focused on fostering connection during COVID and providing community motivation in a virtual format.
LUCIA’S DAY
Easily scheduling live fitness classes
In this situation, Lucia is scheduling a class to attend after she’s done with work. This storyboard helped us empathize and visualize gaps in our designs.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER
What does this interaction look like in more detail?
To manage time effectively, we divided the tasks. I collaborated with another designer on a user flow for scheduling classes. Initially, I tackled the flow independently, then presented my version to my teammate. Together, we refined and improved it.

People wanted more intuitive actions and emphasized a “less is more” approach for the exercise classes

Once we developed a sufficient range of design solutions, we proceeded to create mid-fidelity wireframes. After refining these designs, we conducted usability testing to evaluate their effectiveness.

We needed clearer advertising for OV products and better section placement

Taking our usability testing feedback from our mid-fi wireframes, we implemented new solutions to our information architecture choices. We also incorporated colors and typography that matched the Outdoor Voices brand.

LESSONS

Universal solutions:
By promoting activities and user content, we fostered a sense of belonging. However, we noticed that some users preferred less interaction. This prompted us to reassess our target audience and our approach, allowing for meaningful interaction without overwhelming users.
Balancing Business and User Needs:
Balancing business needs with user needs for product exposure, was a challenge. It took time to find a solution, but we used influencers in the community section to mix product promotion with user content, ensuring the ads didn’t feel forced.

Feature overload
One issue our group faced was trying to include too many features. We saw our time budget shrinking and weren’t making much progress. We solved this by prioritizing features and focusing on the most important ones first.

Wow, we made it to the end together! 🎉 I hope you had as much fun exploring my work as I did creating it. If you’re curious to see more of my process, feel free to dive into my other projects.

We could stand out in the market by offering live classes and community interaction!
These companies didn’t offer a platform for immediate community interaction and live video classes, but were very similar in brand ideology and target audience.
The content was regulated, with companies deciding what to highlight through influencers, focusing heavily on motivational and affirmation stories. They universally promoted a positive, healthy lifestyle, reflecting each company’s values and beliefs.
